Search Engine Optimization, Social Media, Marketing For Businesses, Website Design And Development

Essentials Of Good Website DesignThere is more to building a great website than what your site actually looks like, you can have a great looking website but if the structure of the site and placement of some crucial elements are not correct your sites visitors will get confused or bored and will most likely leave your site and not return again, and further more your website design needs to attract the right visitors that are looking for the content that you are displaying on the site, the content of your website will dictate what type of visitors that you will attract.

    Responsive Design
The one most crucial aspect of any website design these days is to build a responsive site, by responsive we mean the website needs to adapt to any screen size that your website visitors are using, they maybe viewing your website on a smart phone, a tablet or on a desk top computer and with the amount of people using smart phones to browse the internet increasing all the time this is an important design consideration.

    Website Blog
Modern websites need a blog and particularly business websites that are selling goods online or in a retail shop, your blog content needs to be about the type of goods or products that you are selling, you can write articles on these products explaining how they work, how they are made and why they are better than your competitors products then place an internal link to the product in question, this is great for Search engine optimization and Google rankings.

    Contact And Business Details
Important information like your business details and contact information needs to be placed in a location that is easily seen from every page of your website, usually this information should be placed in the top right hand side of your website and again in the footer so when visitors scroll down the page they will see your details before moving on.

    Website Security
Businesses selling goods online need security and this is one of the most important features your website needs, if customers are trusting you with there personal information like credit card numbers, postal address and phone numbers etc you do not want this information falling into the wrong hands, you need to purchase an SSL certificate from your hosting provider this will place the little green padlock on the visitors browser indicating that your website is secure for transactions like credit cards and personal information online.

Optimizing Joomla WebsitesJoomla is a great stand alone content management system, the team of developers are pushing forward with the development and are improving all the time, and as such updates are common, they have updating Joomla in leaps and bounds since 3.7.5 arrived and are now at 3.8.3 most of the updates are centered around security and streamline the system.

Updating Joomla is as simple as logging into the websites back end and go the updates in the console, even though it is normally safe to apply the Joomla update, you need to take caution if your updates have been left behind, updating from a long outdated Joomla version can cause problems when the new version is installed, so always take a back up before hand.

There are a few settings in Joomla global configuration that need tweaking when you first instal the content management system, under site settings in global configuration there are some seo settings on the right hand side, you need to set search engine friendly urls to yes which optimize the urls structure for better seo, and set use url rewriting to yes but only when you first rename your htaccess.txt file to .htaccess, if you turn this on with out renaming the txt file you may be denied access to your website.

In your global configuration settings under system turn on system cache to on conservative caching this will help with your sites speed as the system will cache the pages for a faster website the time for the cache setting is around fifteen minutes, you can also increase your session setting but only a little, if you have to keep on leaving the computer, the default time setting is fifteen minutes if you are away from the pc any longer than this you will be logged out automatically.

Global configuration under server, there are a few tweaks you can make here aswell, turn on gzip page compression this will compress file output but only if your system supports it, under mail settings turn mailer from php mail to SMTP the php mailer is not that efficient, when you turn on the SMTP you will need to fill in the required email information from your hosting provider.

Always try to delete any modules that are not published, this keeps the back end clean and uncluttered, make sure you have the global configuration robots tag set to index, follow this sets the entire website to index follow unless otherwise changed in individual menu items or articles etc, with out index, follow your website will not be indexed by google, and try to avoid google indexing your website before your are finished building it.

When you un publish menu items, modules and components or extensions, and you are sure you will not be needing them again, move them to the trash then empty the trash this action will completely remove them from your website, under system clear the websites cache when you have been attending to your website for any period of time, this removes unused data for a more efficient running system.
